The part that never changes

Where the line falls between selling and scrapping
The honest dividing line is whether the car could still be registered and driven by somebody else. If it can, and you have the patience for listings, messages and test drives, a private sale will usually beat any wholesale offer. That gap is the difference between retail and wholesale prices, and no buyer in our position can close it.
Once a car needs a repair worth more than the car, or it cannot pass a roadworthy, that retail market largely disappears. The value moves into the parts and the metal — and at that point a wrecker pays more than anyone else, because we are the buyer those parts were always going to end up with.
What actually moves the number
Four things: demand for that model’s parts across the ACT and nearby NSW, how complete the vehicle is, its weight, and how much work the collection takes. A complete car with its engine, gearbox, catalytic converter, wheels and panels intact is worth considerably more than the same car after somebody has taken the good bits off it.
