You can sell an unregistered vehicle. We buy them constantly. What changes is the paperwork, not whether the sale can happen.
Selling an unregistered car privately is genuinely awkward. You cannot legally offer a test drive on the road. The buyer has to arrange transport or an unregistered vehicle permit. And in the ACT you would normally need a roadworthy inspection to transfer registration, which for an older car can cost more than the car is worth.
None of that applies when you sell to a licensed motor wrecker. We buy vehicles as-is for dismantling and recycling, so there is no roadworthy, no inspection, no permit and no test drive.
ACT plates remain the property of the Territory and should be returned rather than left on a car you have sold. The sequence is straightforward:
If the car is registered in NSW — Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra, Googong — this goes through Service NSW instead. It catches people out regularly.
If there is unused time left on the registration when you cancel it, you may be entitled to a refund of the remaining portion, and often of the CTP insurance component as well. The amount depends on how long is left and how the vehicle was registered.
This is genuinely worth doing and it is frequently overlooked, because people assume that letting a registration lapse and cancelling it are the same thing. They are not. Letting it lapse forfeits the remainder; cancelling it may recover some of it.
Registration that expired a decade ago is no obstacle — the vehicle is simply unregistered, and how long it has been that way makes no difference to us.
Written-off vehicles are also fine. A car recorded on the written-off vehicles register cannot generally return to the road, which is precisely why wrecking and recycling is the appropriate destination for it. Tell us it has been written off when you call so we can quote accurately.
Photo identification, and something that reasonably establishes the car is yours to sell. That might be the registration papers, a previous receipt of sale, or an insurance record. If the vehicle is part of a deceased estate we will need documentation showing you are authorised to sell it.
If you are not certain what you have, call and describe it. We will tell you honestly whether it is enough before we send a truck.

No, you do not. Since we are a licensed motor vehicle dealer buying cars for wrecking or resale, we purchase them "as-is". This saves you the time and money of getting an inspection.
We often offer same-day service! If you call us in the morning, we can usually collect your vehicle by the afternoon. We can also schedule a specific time that works for you.
The value depends on the make, model, weight, and condition of the vehicle. We offer competitive rates based on current metal prices and parts demand. Call us for a free quote!
Yes. Unregistered, written-off, flood or hail damaged, and vehicles that don’t start are all accepted. We handle the ownership transfer paperwork and can advise on cancelling registration, so there’s nothing extra for you to organise.
It depends on the payout figure owing versus the value of the car. Give us a call and we’ll talk through your specific situation — in many cases the finance needs to be settled as part of the sale, and we can explain exactly how that works before you commit to anything.
Not usually. We can talk you through reporting missing plates when we arrange the ownership transfer, so it doesn’t hold up the sale or leave you exposed to fines or tolls on plates that are no longer on the car.
This comes up often with inherited vehicles or family cars. If you’re the executor of an estate or otherwise legally authorised to sell the vehicle, we can complete the sale — just mention your situation when you call so we can explain exactly what’s needed.
Yes, we regularly collect multiple vehicles from the same property in one visit — a common scenario for deceased estates, business fleets, or a household clearing out several old cars at once. Let us know how many when you call so we can plan the pickup properly.
Not at all. Every quote is free and obligation-free. You’re welcome to compare it against other offers before deciding, and there’s no pressure or cost involved in simply asking what your car is worth.
A pure scrap metal price only accounts for the weight of the steel. We factor in reusable parts, make and model demand, and current market conditions as well, which is usually why our offer comes in higher than a straight per-tonne scrap price — plus we come to you and tow it for free.
Every ACT district — Belconnen, Gungahlin, Tuggeranong, Woden Valley, Inner North, Inner South, Weston Creek and Molonglo Valley — plus Queanbeyan and the surrounding NSW region. If you’re unsure whether your specific street is covered, just give us a call; the answer is almost always yes.
Our focus is passenger cars, SUVs, utes, and vans, including business and fleet vehicles. If you have something outside that range, give us a call and we’ll let you know honestly whether it’s something we can help with.
